"Nevsky prospekt" 2010,oil on canvas,60х50. |
The rain in Petersburg is not the subject of meteorology, but of culture, like the snow on an Alpine health resort, like a hot night on Cuba. Petersburg architecture loses its strictness in the rain and there are no more separate buildings, facades, roofs, balustrades and belle-etages in the city landscape they turn into each other freely with a metropolitan scope. The city, still being imposing and majestic, gains a kind of inconstant vagueness and unsteady mystery. To see that one just needs to forget the material matter of the rain, such as wet feet or water under his collar and to focus on its aesthetic side for example, on the lines of Petersburg roofs, drain-pipes and legs of girls passing by.
